Abstract:
  Optical clocks based on alkaline-earth(-like) atoms trapped in optical lattices have surpassed the performance of conventional atomic fountain clocks, featuring  high accuracy levels in the order of 10-18. A lattice clock employing one fermionic isotope of ytterbium 171Yb has become one of the best optical clocks, benefiting from its simplest hyperfine structure of the spin-1/2 system. I will give a brief introduction of the potential applications of high-precision optical clocks, and report the ongoing research of an Yb clock under construction in WIPM. The clock spectroscopy with a Hz-level linewidth that we have recently attained is an important step towards the closed-loop operation.
